A Free Invoice Generator, No Account Needed — Because PopPay Is Free at Heart
We built a dead-simple free invoice generator for South Africa — make a SARS-aware PDF in 2 minutes, no signup. Here is why it is genuinely free, and how PopPay actually makes money.
We just shipped something small on purpose: a free invoice generator that makes a clean, SARS-aware PDF in about two minutes. No account. No credit card. No “free trial” that quietly expires. Fill in your details, add 15% VAT if you are registered, download.
That might seem like an odd thing for a software company to build — a tool that asks nothing of you. So here is the thinking behind it.
PopPay is free at heart
PopPay exists so a South African business can handle the unglamorous money admin — quotes, invoices, tracking who has paid, keeping records your accountant will actually accept — without paying for the privilege. You can run that whole loop for free. That is not a loss-leader or a trap; it is the product.
The best way to get value out of PopPay is still to create a free account and use the whole thing: every invoice saved in one place, EFT proof-of-payment matching, quotes you can convert to invoices, expenses, and automatic follow-ups that chase late payers on WhatsApp so you don’t have to. That’s where the hours-saved really add up. If you want the full picture, we compared it against the paid tools in our guide to free invoice software in South Africa.
But sometimes you just want a PDF
Not everyone is ready for an account on day one. Sometimes you are a freelancer who needs to send one invoice tonight, or a tradesman who just wants a tidy document with your banking details on it. You don’t want to sign up for anything — you want a PDF and nothing more.
Fair enough. So we took the same invoice engine that powers the full app and stripped it back to a single page anyone can use logged-out. It lays out the fields SARS expects, calculates VAT for you, and hands you a professional invoice. That’s the whole tool. (New to invoicing? Our step-by-step guide walks through each field.)
If you decide later that you want to keep your invoices and stop chasing payments manually, creating an account takes a minute and your first invoice comes with you.
So how do we actually make money?
Honest answer, because it shapes everything above: PopPay makes money on optional payment links.
When a business wants their customers to be able to pay an invoice instantly online — tap a link, pay, done — they can add a payment link, and we earn a small fee on that transaction. That’s it. It’s entirely opt-in. If you only ever want to send invoices and track EFTs yourself, you can use PopPay for free indefinitely and we never charge you a cent.
That model is why the generator can be genuinely free. We don’t need to gate invoicing behind a subscription, because we’d rather earn when we’ve actually helped you get paid faster — not for the privilege of typing out an invoice.
Try it
If you just want the PDF, generate your invoice free — no signup. If you’d rather run the whole business on it, create a free account and add payment links only if and when you want them.
Free at heart. We mean it.
A note on “SARS-aware” / “SARS-compliant”: it means an invoice includes the fields SARS expects on a tax invoice. This is general information, not tax advice, and does not guarantee compliance for your specific situation — if you are VAT-registered or unsure, have your accountant review the final invoice. See SARS invoice requirements for the detail.
