We just shipped something small on purpose: a free invoice generator that makes a clean, SARS-aware PDF in about two minutes. No account. No credit card. No “free trial” that quietly expires. Fill in your details, add 15% VAT if you are registered, download.

That might seem like an odd thing for a software company to build — a tool that asks nothing of you. So here is the thinking behind it.

PopPay is free at heart

PopPay helps South African SMEs manage quotes, invoices and records for accountant review. Start at R0/month.

With a PopPay account at R0/month, you can save invoices, convert quotes to invoices, record expenses and review suggested EFT proof matches. Share invoices and follow up through your own channels. PopPay does not send WhatsApp or SMS for you. Proof of payment is not payment; check that the money has arrived before recording it. But sometimes you just want a PDF

Not everyone is ready for an account on day one. Sometimes you are a freelancer who needs to send one invoice tonight, or a tradesman who just wants a tidy document with your banking details on it. You don’t want to sign up for anything — you want a PDF and nothing more.

Fair enough. So we took the same invoice engine that powers the full app and stripped it back to a single page anyone can use logged-out. If you decide later that you want to keep your invoices in PopPay, create an account and bring your first invoice with you. You still share and follow up yourself.

So how do we actually make money?

Honest answer, because it shapes everything above: PopPay makes money on optional payment links.

Businesses can add an optional card payment link to an invoice, with transaction fees when customers use it. You can also put your banking details on the invoice so customers can pay by EFT. PopPay starts at R0/month; this is not a promise of free access forever.
